I am obsessed with elixirs and it all started with Meghan Telpher’s “Uncoffee” recipe.
I started drinking coffee in grade 8 (you can read all about how I quit coffee here) and quit drinking coffee a year and a half ago! I still can’t believe it!
I learned all about elixirs during the Culinary Nutrition Program and became obsessed with the possibilities of this new morning drink!
My elixirs have changed throughout the past few months and I am always mixing it up!
I want to share with you my basic recipe and give you options to customize!
Wait! But what exactly is an ELIXIR? Good question!
An elixir is a therapeutic drink make with spices, herbs, medicinal mushrooms and adaptogens that are packed with nutrition and healing benefits. The key to making this drink delicious and nutritious is to pair these herbs with the right base ingredients and lots of FAT!
An adaptogen is a natural substance that helps your body deal with stress. Adaptogens help strengthen the body’s ability to respond to stress while improving the body’s ability to cope with that stress. Adaptogens work slowly but with consistent use you will be able to notice the benefits. By improving your body’s ability to cope with anxiety, fight fatigue, balance mood, relax the mind, and strengthen your immune system, adaptogens are a vital addition to your diet and lifestyle.
Adaptogens have the power of balance. They can calm you down while also giving you energy without a crash. Adaptogens are vital to supporting the adrenal system, which can become fatigued with prolonged stress.
Adding a healthy source of fat to an elixir is key to helping your body absorb the fat-soluble nutrients. Fat also helps provide sustained energy and satisfaction. Fat is critical to boost cognitive function and focus, while helping to calm our nervous system. We need fat for healthy skin, stabilizing blood sugar and it’s SO delicious!
